Size and rules

Suitcase sizes in inches and cm

Suitcases are sold in inches, Shinkansen rules use centimetres. This table bridges the two.

Typical totals by size

These are typical totals. Brands differ, so always check your own bag.

  • 20 inch: about 115 to 120 cm, free.
  • 24 inch: about 145 to 150 cm, free.
  • 26 inch: about 152 to 158 cm, usually free.
  • 28 inch: about 156 to 165 cm, borderline.
  • 30 inch and up: about 165 to 180 cm, reserve an oversized baggage seat.

Why the inch number misleads

The inch size usually only describes height. Width and depth vary a lot, which is why two 28 inch cases can land on different sides of the 160 cm line.
