How do I measure my suitcase?
Add height, width and depth including wheels and handles. A 28 inch suitcase is often around 160 to 170 cm in total.
Do oversized baggage seats cost extra?
No. The seat costs the normal reserved fare. Boarding without a reservation may end in a penalty if staff find your luggage too big.
Can Japan Rail Pass holders book these seats?
Yes. JR Pass holders can reserve oversized baggage seats free of charge at ticket offices, machines or online.
How many bags can I bring?
Up to two items, each under 250 cm total and 30 kg, plus small personal items.
Are strollers and wheelchairs included?
No. Strollers, wheelchairs and musical instruments are exempt from the oversized baggage rule.
Does the rule apply to non-reserved cars?
Oversized luggage must go with a reserved oversized baggage seat, so use reserved cars.
