How to measure your suitcase for the Shinkansen

A two minute measurement at home saves you a lot of stress at the station.

Measuring the height of a soft suitcase in a hotel room

Measure in three steps

Stand the bag upright on a flat floor and use a tape measure.

  • Height from floor to top, including wheels and handle.
  • Width at the widest point.
  • Depth including pockets and bulges.

Soft and expandable bags

Measure a soft bag when it is fully packed. If your suitcase has an expansion zipper, measure it expanded if you plan to use it.

Common sizes

A cabin bag is around 115 cm in total. A 24 inch case is usually about 150 cm. A 28 inch case often lands just under or over 160 cm, so check yours before you go.
