Size and rules

Shinkansen luggage size limits

Three numbers decide everything on the Shinkansen: 160, 250 and the total of height, width and depth.

How size is measured

Add the height, width and depth of your bag, including wheels and handles. The total is what counts, not any single side.

The three size bands

Each band has its own rule, and the same rules apply on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu lines.

  • Up to 160 cm: free, no reservation needed.
  • 161 to 250 cm: reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area.
  • Over 250 cm: not allowed on board.

What happens without a reservation

If staff judge your bag to be oversized and you have no reservation, you may be asked to pay a penalty and move your bag. It is a judgment call, so the safest choice is to book the right seat.
