How to book an oversized baggage seat

Luggage that measures 161 to 250 cm in total needs a seat with an oversized baggage area on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. Here are the three ways to get one.

The easiest way: travel with a Japan Rail Pass

A Japan Rail Pass already covers the two things you need for big luggage: a reserved seat and the oversized baggage area behind it. There is no reservation fee and no separate baggage ticket, so you only have to book the seat.

You can make that booking yourself in about a minute by scanning the QR code on your pass at a Shinkansen ticket machine, or let staff at any JR desk do it for you.

With a Japan Rail Pass

Two ways to do it, and both are free with your pass. Pick whichever you are more comfortable with.

Scan the QR code at a ticket machine

  1. 1Find a Shinkansen reserved seat ticket machine, the ones with English on the screen.
  2. 2Scan the QR code printed on your Japan Rail Pass when the machine asks for your pass.
  3. 3Choose your train, then pick a seat with an oversized baggage area in the last row of a car.
  4. 4Take the tickets the machine prints and board. Nothing extra is charged.

Ask staff at a JR desk

  1. 1Go to any JR ticket desk in Japan, the offices marked Midori no Madoguchi.
  2. 2Show your Japan Rail Pass and say you need a seat with an oversized baggage area.
  3. 3Staff book the seat on the spot and hand you the tickets. They can also move an existing booking.

With smartEX or the smartEX app

smartEX is JR Central's own booking service for the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen. Book from a laptop or straight from the phone app, before you leave home or on the platform.

Book in the app or online

  1. 1Create a free smartEX account and add a credit card. It works on the website and in the smartEX app for iPhone and Android.
  2. 2Search your Tokaido or Sanyo Shinkansen journey, from Tokyo to Hakata.
  3. 3When you pick seats, choose a seat with an oversized baggage area. These are in the last row of the car and cost nothing extra.
  4. 4Board with the booking in the app. Your seat and the baggage space behind it are held for you.

Good to know

  • Covers the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen, from Tokyo to Hakata.
  • The seat with the baggage area is a normal reserved seat, so there is no extra baggage fee.
  • You need an account and a credit card, and you pay for the ticket itself.
  • Seat bookings open about a month ahead, and the baggage seats go first on busy trains.
  • For Kyushu journeys beyond Hakata, or if you would rather not sign up, use a Japan Rail Pass or book at the station.

At the station

No account, no app and no pass required. This works on every line, but the space behind the last row is limited and can be gone before you arrive.

Machine or ticket desk

  1. 1Go to a reserved seat ticket machine or a JR ticket desk at any major station.
  2. 2Press the oversized baggage button on the machine, or ask staff for a seat with an oversized baggage area.
  3. 3Pay for your ticket and the seat together. The baggage area itself carries no charge.

Good to know

  • Works on every line, including Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu trains.
  • No account, app or pass needed. You pay for the ticket and the seat at the same time.
  • Machines have English screens. At a ticket desk, staff can pick the right seat for you.
  • You can change or cancel the seat at the machine or desk before you board.
  • Arrive early on busy days. If every baggage seat is taken, staff cannot put your case in the carriage.

Worth knowing

Which lines need a reservation

The rule applies to the Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo to Shin-Osaka), the Sanyo Shinkansen (Shin-Osaka to Hakata), the Kyushu Shinkansen (Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo) and the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen. Other lines such as Tohoku or Hokuriku do not require it, but space is still limited.

If you board without one

Staff may ask you to move the case to an available baggage area, and if they judge it too big you can end up with a penalty. On a full train there may be no space left at all, so book early during Golden Week, Obon and New Year.

Baggage corners

Some Tokaido and Sanyo trains also have lockable baggage corners in selected cars. These are reserved separately, so check availability when you book your seat.

Exceptions

Strollers, wheelchairs and musical instruments in cases are exempt. Sports equipment such as ski bags and bicycles in covers still counts toward the size rule.

Local trains, subway and metro

Local JR lines, the subway and metro do not need a seat or luggage reservation. Just tap in and out with an IC card like Suica, Pasmo or Icoca. Keep an eye on your balance with our free IC card balance checker app.

Common questions

Can I use the QR code on my Japan Rail Pass to reserve a baggage seat?

Yes. Scan the QR code on your pass at a Shinkansen reserved seat ticket machine, choose your train and pick a seat with an oversized baggage area. The seat and the baggage space are included in your pass at no extra cost.

Do I need a smartEX account to bring large luggage?

No. smartEX is one of several options. Japan Rail Pass holders can book through a ticket machine or a JR desk, and any traveler can book at the station without an account.

Can I book an oversized baggage seat at the station on the day of travel?

Yes, at a reserved seat ticket machine or a JR ticket desk. The space behind the last row is limited, so on busy days it can already be taken. Booking a few days ahead is safer, especially during Golden Week, Obon and New Year.

Does the oversized baggage area cost extra?

No. The seat with the baggage area is a normal reserved seat. Only the seat price applies, and with a Japan Rail Pass even that is covered.

Next steps

Still unsure about your case? Measure it first. Under 160 cm in total rides freely, 161 to 250 cm needs the baggage seat, and over 250 cm has to be forwarded instead.
