Size and rules

How many bags can you bring on the Shinkansen?

Most travellers can bring two pieces of luggage plus a small personal item. Here is how the allowance works.

The basic allowance

JR allows up to two pieces of hand luggage per passenger, each up to 30 kg and within the size limits. Small items like a handbag, camera bag or umbrella are not counted.

Two large suitcases

If both bags are over 160 cm in total, you still only need one seat with an oversized baggage area, but the space behind the seat is limited. Two very large bags may not fit, so consider sending one ahead.

Travelling as a group

Groups should book the full last row of a car. That way the whole baggage area behind it is yours, and nobody has to squeeze bags into the aisle.
