Tohoku and Hokkaido Shinkansen with luggage

Heading north to Sendai, Morioka, Aomori or Hakodate? Here is how to handle luggage on Hayabusa, Yamabiko and Komachi trains.

Where to put big bags

The best spot for a large suitcase is behind the last row of seats in your car. Reserve a last row seat so you can keep an eye on it.

Keep total size under 250 cm. Bags up to around 160 cm usually fit overhead or at your feet.

With a Japan Rail Pass, seats with an oversized baggage area are included at no extra cost. Book them by scanning the QR code on your pass at a Shinkansen ticket machine or at any staffed JR desk. Get your Japan Rail Pass

Hayabusa and Komachi are all reserved

Hayabusa and Komachi only have reserved seats, so you will be booking anyway. Ask for the last row at the time of booking.

Hayabusa and Komachi often run coupled together. Make sure you board the correct half of the train.

Continuing to Sapporo

The Shinkansen ends at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto. From there, limited express trains continue to Sapporo with their own luggage racks at the ends of each car.
